Somalia Establishes National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency

Mogadishu, 24 January 2026 — Somalia has reached a historic milestone in strengthening its climate and disaster risk management framework following the approval of the law establishing the National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency by the House of the People of the Federal Parliament.

A total of 141 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the law, marking a major national achievement that formalizes the country’s mandate for weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and the delivery of reliable climate services. The establishment of the Agency represents a strategic step toward enhancing Somalia’s capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to climate-related hazards.

The Minister of Environment and Climate Change welcomed the parliamentary approval, describing it as a critical advancement in safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure. The new Agency will play a central role in providing timely and accurate meteorological and climate information to support public safety, disaster risk reduction, and evidence-based development planning.

The law also strengthens national coordination in climate service delivery, benefiting key sectors such as agriculture, water resources, fisheries, aviation, and humanitarian response. Through improving access to scientific data and early warnings, the Agency will support farmers, pastoralists, fishers, and vulnerable communities across the country.

The passage of this legislation clearly indicate Somalia’s growing commitment to building resilient institutions capable of addressing the increasing impacts of climate variability and extreme weather events. With the law now enacted, the focus will shift to its effective and timely implementation to ensure that the National Meteorological Agency delivers on its mandate in the national interest and for the well-being of the Somali people.
